"For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;" 1 Thess 1: 9

"Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led." 1 Cor 12: 2

"And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts."

The first allusion to idolatry is in the account of Rachel stealing her father's teraphim ( Genesis 31:19 ), which were the relics of the worship of other gods by Laban's progenitors "on the other side of the river in old time" ( Joshua 24:2 ). During their long residence in Egypt the Hebrews fell into idolatry, and it was long before they were delivered from it ( Joshua 24:14 ; Ezekiel 20:7 ). Many a token of God's displeasure fell upon them because of this sin.
