FOOD LAWS
in Eastern Orthodoxy
New Covenant teachings about food laws.
In Christianity, the belief that eating pork, bacon, and shellfish (such as prawns) is allowed is primarily based on the understanding that New Covenant believers are not bound by the Old Testament dietary laws, which were intended to set the Israelites apart. The New Testament teaches that Jesus fulfilled these laws, and the focus shifted from external purification to inner righteousness.
Here are the primary scriptures used to support this, categorized by theme:
Old testament food laws banned:
Bacon, pork, ham, Spam, black-pudding, hot dogs, hamburgers, strangled chicken,, rabbit, lobster, shrimp, prawns, crab, octopus, squid, mussels, clams, oysters, scallops, eels, catfish, sturgeon caviar, whelks, all snails, and all insects (excluding locusts), to name but a few, and other meats must be specially prepared or cannot be eaten, like liver and kidneys. You cannot even eat beef, or a sirloin steak, unless it has had every drop of blood drained out of it, and that just about bans every type of commercially produced pies or pasties from bakeries, and most food in restaurants and cafes. According to Levitical law, the fruit of a woody tree cannot be eaten during the first three years after it is planted. Raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries can be challenging to clean of minute insects without destroying them, leading some to avoid them or use specific inspection methods, and broccoli, cauliflower, and artichokes are notoriously difficult to clean because tiny insects hide deep in their crevices. As all insects were banned it is argued you cannot eat leafy vegetables or fruits that may contain insects.
During passover foods containing yeast were banned, so it would be banned at Easter if applied today. But banning cheeses is based strict interpretations rather than certain old God made restrictions. But Jews will not eat Parmesan, Roquefort, Gouda, Cheddar, Camembert, Brie, Gorgonzola, Wensleydale, Feta, and many many more, unless they specially produce them.
One has to ask the question of scruples: if we accepted these laws: "Is it permissible to shop for a person who eats meats banned in the old law? Like your own elderly parents." Also massive amounts of our time that could go to bible study, or helping the poor, is wasted on fussing and faffing, and running hither and thither to avoid breaking these "laws".
Can you not see that making the mistake of thinking these old laws still apply from a now defunct dead covenant, not only make life and cuisine more restrictive and boring, but impede the gospel spreading across the Earth with food "laws" that ban massive amounts of daily meals enjoyed in everyday life in many cultures across the whole world. Even a super-massive number of national dishes contain these ingredients. People are also more prone to starvation and malnutrition, and survivalism is weakened.
Jesus declared all meats clean. Proof of this is provided with a large bible study at the end of this page.
Eastern Orthodoxy and food laws:
You would think that as the new covenant law of Jesus gives us complete freedom on eating foods, the Orthodox would have that freedom in Christ, but far from it. In order to trap their proselytes into obedience to their pharisee style pseudo clergy, and reinforce a clockwork life style along with keeping calendar days, the Eastern Orthodox religion imposes their own man made food laws, on a weekly, monthly and yearly cycle, trapping their victims into "churchianity", a counterfeit of Christianity.
Acts 15.
In Acts 15 it is taught by God that the draconian laws of the old covenant are "done away" in the new covenant law, in favour of a strong emphasis on avoiding
1) Idols and idolatry.
2) Fornication (sexual sin of all kinds)
3) Strangled and blood.
The Eastern Orthodoxy religion catastrophically breaks all 3 of these issues. They make idols, and encourage shrines in the home full of their idols, renamed "icons", a bit like saying about bombing civilians "it was not murder it was collateral damage!" . They teach that their priests are empowered with special powers from God to allow unbiblical remarriage (adultery) and have invented a super massive cascade of man made rules and regulations about food, to be practiced on a twice weekly basis, with others month by month, and others yearly. Their entirely man made rules, some doubtless inspired by demonic forces, are so draconian, over time they have magnanimously said the objective of keeping these strict stringent rules is not legalism, to thwart rebellion among their converts wondering where their "freedom in Christ" disappeared to. The truth is, like the calendar life style, their food laws are just another method of involving the laity in clockwork religious practices that keep the people in a momentum of being religious puppets.
Eastern Orthodox man-make (Satan or demon inspired) food laws .
Eastern Orthodox food laws centre on periodic fasting from animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, fish) and sometimes oil/wine, especially during major seasons like Great Lent, with stricter rules on weekdays (Wed/Fri) and allowances for shellfish, fruits, veggies, grains, emphasizing spiritual growth over legalism, guided by spiritual fathers for individual needs.
General Principles
-
Spiritual Purpose: Fasting aims to heal the soul, foster prayer, and overcome passions, not just dietary restriction.
-
No Old Testament Cleanliness Laws: The Church dropped Old Testament food purity laws (like pork prohibitions) based on Christ's teachings.
-
Flexibility: Accommodations are made for illness, age, and health, usually with a spiritual father's guidance.
Key Fasting Periods
-
Great Lent (Before Easter): Strict fasting from meat, dairy, eggs, fish, oil, and wine; shellfish allowed on weekends/feast days.
-
Nativity Fast (Advent): Similar to Lent but with more allowances for fish and oil.
-
Apostles' Fast (After Pentecost): Varies in length; typically includes Wednesdays, Fridays, and Mondays.
-
Dormition Fast (Before Assumption): Two weeks before August 15.
Weekly Fasting
-
Wednesdays & Fridays: Abstinence from meat, dairy, eggs, and sometimes fish, oil, and wine (depending on the season/feast).
What's Allowed (During Fasting Periods)
-
Vegan Base: Fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, seeds.
-
Shellfish: Shrimp, octopus, squid, mussels, clams (as they lack blood) are permitted on many fast days, including strict Lenten weekdays.
What's Prohibited (During Fasting Periods)
-
Category I: Meat (beef, pork, poultry).
-
Category II: Dairy (milk, cheese, butter, eggs).
-
Category III: Vertebrate fish (trout, tuna, salmon), except on specific feast days like Annunciation/Palm Sunday.
-
Category IV: Olive oil and wine (often restricted during stricter Lenten weekdays).
In order to justify their clever entrapment of people under their false authority, and clockwork churchianity life-style, the Eastern Orthodox fake bishops say all this imposed fasting and keeping man-made food laws "intensifies prayer" promotes somehow almsgiving, and supposedly avoids sin, and that the "goal" is spiritual transformation. They on the one hand harsh fake laws, then on the other claim they are innocent of legalism in enforcing them. They then warn against pride if you keep their bogus laws.
BIBLE STUDY ABOUT FOOD:
Jesus Declares All Foods Clean
Mark 7:18-19 "
And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?"
Matthew 15:11 "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man."
Acts 10:10-15. "
10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common."
Romans 14:14: "I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
Romans 14:17-22
17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
20 For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth."
1 Corinthians 10:25-27:
25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
Colossians 2:16-17
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
1 Timothy 4:3-4:
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving.
note: Protestants in the past have usually interpreted this prophecy about Catholics, who forbid to marry (priests) and have many food laws, but it is the modern "Hebrew Roots Movement" who fit this best in my opinion, who outright condemn eating many meats, and self righteously say never to marry a Christian, when it is the other way around - they are the heretics still in bondage under Hagar and leading souls backward into captivity under a law and a covenant now done away (2 Corinthians 3:7-14).
Hebrews 8:13: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Note: Matthew 5:17-18 "not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the law until all is fulfilled" was fulfilled in Luke 24:44-48 where the same expression is used "that all things must be fulfilled". The old law is now gone.
Galatians 3:24-25:
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Col 2:22-23:
20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Key Considerations (Google):
The "Weak" Brother: While Romans 14:14 declares all food clean, Romans 14:15-23 advises that if eating pork makes another believer uncomfortable or causes them to stumble in their faith, one should refrain out of love.
Conscience: Romans 14:14 also notes that if someone believes something is unclean, then to them, it is unclean. The freedom to eat is a matter of conscience before God.
Disclaimer: Some Christian denominations, such as Seventh-day Adventists, interpret the Old Testament laws to still be in effect, arguing that the dietary laws are for health rather than just ceremonial purity. However, the majority of mainstream Christianity holds that these restrictions do not apply to New Covenant believers.
The subject of what you can and cannot eat is taken very seriously by people. GOOGLE QUOTE:
"The rumour that new Enfield rifle cartridges were greased with pig and beef fat was the immediate spark for the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (also known as the Sepoy Mutiny), which was the largest uprising against British rule and a critical turning point in the history of the British Empire. While this event did not cause the immediate collapse of the British Empire—which continued to expand and existed for nearly another century—it did cause the dissolution of the British East India Company and forced a massive restructuring of British rule in India, leading to the establishment of the British Raj."
